The Bon Secours Congregation was instituted by the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Bon Secours, a religious community dedicated to uplifting the downtrodden, with a specific focus on women.
Origins and History
It is fascinating to note that a literal tempest sowed the seeds for the founding of this Congregation. This storm served as the primary source of inspiration for Rev. Fr. Courdex, S.J., who launched this noble venture in 1775 A.D..
The movement evolved through several key stages:
It took formal shape as a religious congregation in 1858.
It was later re-founded in the Archdiocese of Madras – Mylapore in 1894.
The primary objective of this re-foundation was the lofty goal of imparting education to native women.
Since its inception, the Congregation has acted as a beacon, guiding and promoting the educational interests of the poor and marginalized.
Apostolate and Mission
The Congregation has grown steadily in strength and currently consists of 800 dedicated Nuns. Their mission spans several critical fields, including:
Education and Women’s Empowerment.
Orphan and Medical Care.
Social Work.
Today, the primary focus remains the education of women across cities, towns, and the most remote villages. We provide education to all individuals, regardless of caste, religion, or creed. Our commitment to this cause is evidenced by our numerous primary, middle, secondary, and training institutions, as well as our many orphanages.
